Why I Keep Textures at Medium
Some people immediately turn textures down to Low when a game struggles on Steam Deck. I don’t always agree with that approach.
In Star Wars Zero Company, Medium textures provide a much better visual baseline without being the setting I would sacrifice first. Low textures can make characters, environments and objects look noticeably worse while giving you relatively little in return.
Instead, I would attack shadows, effects and post-processing first.
The Steam Deck’s unified memory architecture also gives the system more flexibility than the old-school “VRAM number” discussion might suggest. The most important setting here is the 30 FPS cap.
You can technically leave the display at 60Hz and cap the game at 30 FPS, which works well. A 30Hz profile can also make sense if you want to prioritize power efficiency and consistency.
Personally, I prefer a clean 30 FPS target rather than letting the system bounce between 27, 34, 41 and 50 FPS. Those fluctuations are much more noticeable than they look on paper.
I would also avoid unnecessarily restricting TDP. Zero Company is already pushing the Deck, particularly during its heavier scenes. This is not the game where I would aggressively cut power just to gain a little extra battery life.
Battery Life Is Going to Be the Trade-Off
This is where the Steam Deck’s limitations become obvious.
A demanding modern game running with a high-power profile can drain the battery surprisingly quickly. Expect roughly 1 to 1.5 hours in particularly demanding scenarios if you are pushing the hardware hard.

But there is an important distinction between battery life and playability. A tactical game like Zero Company is easier to play at a low frame rate than something like a fast action game. You can also pause between encounters, spend time in menus and take breaks from the heaviest sections.
If you want longer sessions, lowering brightness, using a reasonable GPU profile and avoiding unnecessary power consumption will help. Just don’t expect miracles.
My Steam Deck Controller Layout
This is where I think a custom control scheme becomes genuinely useful.
Star Wars Zero Company may have proper controller support, but tactical games often expose weaknesses in standard layouts. Selecting exact tiles, hovering over targets and navigating menus with a stick can become tedious.
My preferred setup would look like this:
- Left Stick: Standard movement and camera control.
- Right Stick: Camera and target navigation.
- Right Trackpad: Mouse input with medium sensitivity.

The right trackpad is the star of the setup.

If you notice that the game feels fine during a quiet tactical encounter but suddenly becomes rough while walking around the base, don’t assume your settings are broken.

Is GeForce Now a Better Option?
If image quality is more important to you than playing locally, cloud streaming is worth considering.
GeForce Now can move the heavy rendering workload away from the Steam Deck and allow you to experience Star Wars Zero Company with significantly higher visual settings. For players with a strong Wi-Fi connection, this can be a dramatic upgrade.
The obvious downside is latency.
For a turn-based tactical game, latency is much less irritating than it would be in a competitive shooter. You are not trying to win a gunfight in 120 milliseconds. You are selecting commands and planning moves.
That makes Zero Company one of the better candidates for cloud streaming.
You also get the obvious battery advantage. Instead of forcing the Steam Deck’s APU to run near its limits, the handheld is mostly decoding the streamed video.

Steam Deck OLED or LCD?
Both Steam Deck versions face essentially the same fundamental hardware limitation.
The OLED model has several advantages, particularly its display quality and battery improvements, but it does not transform Star Wars Zero Company into a 60 FPS handheld game.
The OLED screen does make the game’s cinematic presentation look better, though. Dark environments, glowing effects and Star Wars-style lighting benefit from the superior display characteristics.
If you already own an LCD Deck, I would not buy an OLED specifically for Zero Company performance. The game is still fundamentally limited by the APU.

Yes, with realistic expectations.
I wouldn’t describe Star Wars Zero Company as a perfect Steam Deck game. It is too demanding for that. The hardware has to work hard, frame drops can appear in complicated scenes, and some areas are clearly more comfortable on a desktop PC.
But this is also one of those games where the genre works in its favor.
A locked 30 FPS tactical game is a completely different proposition from a 30 FPS action game. You have time to think. You can study the battlefield. You can plan your squad’s next move instead of relying on lightning-fast reactions.
For the best experience, I would start with 1280×800, Medium textures, Low shadows, Low effects, Dynamic Resolution enabled and a hard 30 FPS cap. Then add a custom controller profile that makes heavy use of the right trackpad and rear buttons.
Don’t waste hours trying to force 60 FPS. The visual sacrifice isn’t worth it.
