If there is one thing I absolutely do not want from a psychological horror game, it is a perfectly timed frame drop when something terrifying is about to crawl out of the darkness. Silent Hill: Townfall is built around tension, atmosphere, and uncomfortable exploration, and its Unreal Engine 5 presentation can look phenomenal. The problem is that all those beautiful shadows, volumetric fog effects, lighting systems, and detailed environments can also push a gaming PC surprisingly hard.
Developed by Screen Burn, formerly known as No Code, and published by Konami and Annapurna Interactive, Silent Hill: Townfall takes the series into a first-person psychological horror experience set on the mysterious Scottish island of St. Amelia. The visual design is exactly what I want from a modern Silent Hill: oppressive darkness, thick fog, eerie interiors, and lighting that makes every doorway look like a terrible life decision.
But if your game is suffering from low FPS, inconsistent frame pacing, micro-stutters, or sudden drops in the Otherworld, don’t immediately blame your GPU. Unreal Engine 5 games can be extremely sensitive to individual graphics options, and the difference between a sensible configuration and an unnecessarily brutal one can be massive.
After spending far too much time tweaking PC games instead of actually playing them, this is the setup I would use to get Silent Hill: Townfall running smoothly without turning its gorgeous horror atmosphere into a blurry mess.

Silent Hill: Townfall PC Requirements: What Hardware Do You Actually Need?
The official hardware targets already tell us something important: Townfall is not designed around extremely high native-resolution frame rates. The recommended configuration targets 4K at 30 FPS with upscaling, which should immediately tell you that technologies such as DLSS, FSR, or TSR are not optional gimmicks here.
The minimum specification is aimed at 1080p, Low settings, and approximately 30 FPS, while the recommended specification moves all the way up to an RTX 3080 or RX 7800 XT for 4K High settings with upscaling. That’s a pretty serious demand for a game where you’re often staring at dark corridors rather than enormous open-world vistas.

The SSD requirement is particularly important. Don’t treat it like one of those games where you can install it on an old mechanical drive and forget about it. UE5 asset streaming can become painfully obvious when the storage subsystem cannot keep up with the constant loading of textures and environmental data.
Start With Windows and GPU Drivers Before Touching Graphics Settings
Before you start lowering every option to Medium, make sure the problem isn’t coming from your operating system or graphics driver. I’ve lost count of the number of times a supposedly ‘badly optimized’ game suddenly behaved better after a clean driver installation and a reboot.
Install the Latest GPU Driver
For NVIDIA cards, install the current Game Ready driver. AMD users should do the same with the latest Radeon Software package.
If you’ve upgraded your GPU recently or have repeatedly installed and removed different driver versions, a clean installation using DDU can be worthwhile. Old driver components can occasionally cause weird crashes, shader issues, or performance inconsistencies.
I wouldn’t run DDU every time a game stutters, though. That’s overkill. Use it when you have reason to suspect a messy driver environment.
Turn On Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling
Windows’ Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling, or HAGS, can be useful for modern DirectX 12 games.
Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics > Default graphics settings, find Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling, enable it, and restart Windows.
Performance gains vary from system to system, so don’t expect some magical 30 FPS increase. The bigger goal is keeping your system configured properly for modern GPU workloads.
Use an Appropriate Windows Power Plan
If you’re chasing every last frame, check your Windows power configuration.
Go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options and select High Performance if available. Some systems may also expose Ultimate Performance.
Personally, I wouldn’t obsess over this setting on a modern desktop. Your GPU driver and motherboard firmware usually handle power management intelligently. Still, checking the setting takes about 30 seconds, so it’s worth eliminating as a potential variable.
Best Silent Hill: Townfall Graphics Settings for PC
This is where the real optimization begins.
The trick isn’t simply making the game look worse. A good optimization profile attacks the settings that consume the most GPU resources while leaving the visual features that actually make Silent Hill feel like Silent Hill.
The following configuration is the starting point I’d recommend for a modern mid-range or high-end gaming PC.

Upscaling Is Your Best Friend
If you’re running an NVIDIA RTX GPU, DLSS Quality should be your first choice. AMD users should start with FSR Quality.
This is probably the single most important setting in the entire menu.
Running Townfall at native 4K can absolutely murder your frame rate, especially when the game throws complicated lighting and volumetric effects at your GPU. Quality-mode upscaling allows the game to render internally below native resolution and reconstruct the final image.
And here’s the thing: Quality upscaling often looks considerably better than simply lowering your resolution.
Start with Quality. If your frame rate is still struggling, move to Balanced. Only go more aggressive if you genuinely need the extra performance.
For systems using TSR, experiment around the 70–75% internal resolution range. The exact sweet spot depends on your display and how sensitive you are to image softness.
Shadow Quality: The Easy FPS Win
Shadows are one of those settings that gamers love to crank to Ultra because ‘Ultra is obviously better.’
Not here.
High-quality dynamic shadows can be extremely expensive, especially in environments filled with multiple light sources and detailed geometry. Dropping Shadow Quality from High or Epic to Medium can produce a noticeable performance improvement while keeping the overall scene almost identical during normal gameplay.
Unless you are the person who spends five minutes staring at the edge of a shadow on a brick wall, you probably won’t miss the higher setting.
Lumen and Indirect Lighting: Don’t Destroy the Atmosphere
This is the setting where I recommend exercising some restraint.
Unreal Engine 5’s lighting technology is a major part of the visual identity of Silent Hill: Townfall. Turning advanced indirect lighting completely off may improve performance, but it can also make the game look dramatically flatter.
That’s a terrible trade for a horror game.
Keep Indirect Lighting around High if your GPU can handle it. If you’re using an older or entry-level card, lowering it further can make sense. But I would sacrifice shadows, effects, and even some resolution before completely destroying the game’s lighting system.
The darkness is basically one of the characters.
Volumetric Fog: Keep the Fog, Just Make It Cheaper
You can’t have Silent Hill without fog. Removing or heavily reducing it feels like playing a completely different game.
Unfortunately, volumetric fog can be expensive because the GPU has to calculate how light interacts with atmospheric volumes. In dense outdoor areas or scenes with complicated lighting, the performance hit can become very noticeable.
Set Volumetric Fog to Medium.
You still get the thick, oppressive atmosphere, but your GPU gets some breathing room. For me, this is one of the best compromises in the entire graphics menu.
Shader Quality and Effects
Shader Quality can become surprisingly expensive during visually complicated scenes, especially when environmental effects, materials, and animated elements are involved.
Medium is the sensible starting point. High may look marginally better, but the performance cost isn’t always worth it.
Effects Quality can also be dropped to Medium if your frame rate is struggling. Explosions and environmental effects may lose some detail, but the core atmosphere remains intact.
Texture Quality: Don’t Lower This First
Texture Quality is often blamed for VRAM problems, but if your graphics card has enough memory, lowering textures can be a poor optimization choice.
If you have 8GB or more of VRAM, I’d start with High textures. If you’re using a GPU with less VRAM, Medium is safer.
Textures generally don’t hammer your GPU’s raw rendering performance as aggressively as shadows, lighting, fog, and other effects. They primarily increase VRAM usage.
So if you’re getting 45 FPS instead of 60 FPS, dropping textures probably isn’t going to magically fix the problem.
Turn Motion Blur Off
This one isn’t really controversial.
Motion Blur: Off.
I understand why developers use it. It can make camera movement appear smoother and gives games a cinematic presentation. But when you’re trying to diagnose stuttering, motion blur can make the image look even worse.
It also hides detail during quick camera movement, which is particularly annoying in a first-person horror game where spotting something in the darkness matters.
Film Grain and Chromatic Aberration are more subjective. Keep them if you like the cinematic presentation; disable them if you prefer a cleaner image.
How to Fix Micro-Stutters in Silent Hill: Townfall
High average FPS doesn’t necessarily mean a game is running well.
You can have an average of 70 FPS and still feel like the game is hitching every few seconds. That’s a frame-pacing problem, and it can be much more irritating than simply having a lower but stable frame rate.
Give Shader Compilation Time
Unreal Engine games can experience shader-related stutters when assets or shaders are being prepared.
After the first launch, don’t immediately sprint into the campaign. Give the game a little time at the main menu and allow background preparation to finish.
If you constantly restart the game before shaders and assets have been processed, you can end up repeatedly experiencing the same hitching.
Install the Game on an SSD
This isn’t negotiable if you want consistent streaming performance.
A modern UE5 game can constantly pull textures, meshes, shaders, and environmental data from storage. An old HDD can become a bottleneck, producing hitching as you move through new areas.
An NVMe SSD is ideal, but a decent SATA SSD is still vastly preferable to a mechanical HDD.
Check Your RAM Usage
16 GB of RAM can still work, but 32 GB gives modern games considerably more breathing room.
Close unnecessary applications before launching the game, especially browsers with dozens of tabs, launchers, recording software, and other memory-hungry programs.
Tools such as Intelligent Standby List Cleaner can help some systems manage memory behavior, but I wouldn’t install random optimization utilities just because a YouTube video promises ‘ZERO STUTTER.’ Start with the basics first.
The Best Balanced Settings Profile
If you simply want the settings without spending an hour inside menus, this is the profile I’d try first:
- Display Mode: Fullscreen
- Resolution: Native monitor resolution
- Upscaling: DLSS / FSR Quality
- Indirect Lighting: High
- Shadow Quality: Medium
- Volumetric Fog: Medium
- Shader Quality: Medium
- Texture Quality: High with 8GB+ VRAM
- Effects Quality: Medium
- Motion Blur: Off
- Film Grain: Personal preference
- Chromatic Aberration: Personal preference
- V-Sync: Off with G-Sync/FreeSync enabled
This setup isn’t about chasing a meaningless benchmark number. It’s about preserving what makes Silent Hill: Townfall visually special while cutting the settings that are most likely to hammer your GPU.
What to Lower First If Your FPS Is Still Bad
If you’re still getting poor performance, don’t randomly turn everything down. Lower settings in this order:
- Upscaling Quality — move from Quality to Balanced.
- Shadow Quality — High to Medium.
- Volumetric Fog — High to Medium.
- Indirect Lighting — High to Medium or Low.
- Effects Quality — High to Medium.
- Shader Quality — High to Medium.
- Resolution / Internal Resolution — only after the other options.
This approach gives you much more control over the visual result.
If you’re targeting 60 FPS, don’t be afraid of Balanced upscaling. If you’re chasing 120 FPS on a high-refresh display, you’re going to have to make bigger compromises, especially on GPUs around the RTX 3060/4060 or RX 6600/7600 performance class.
Final Verdict: Make the Game Smooth, Not Ugly
The worst optimization mistake you can make in Silent Hill: Townfall is turning every graphics option down and then wondering why the game no longer looks frightening.
The horror depends heavily on lighting, fog, shadows, and environmental detail. Keep the atmosphere and cut the expensive excess. Medium shadows, medium volumetric fog, High indirect lighting, sensible textures, and Quality-mode upscaling form an excellent baseline for most modern gaming PCs.
And don’t get obsessed with the highest possible FPS. A stable 60 FPS with good frame pacing is far more enjoyable than a game jumping between 90 and 45 FPS every time you walk through a doorway.
Silent Hill: Townfall is supposed to make you uncomfortable. Your frame rate shouldn’t.
