Servant of the Lake Walkthrough: Kitchen & Basement Key Locations and Alchemy Puzzle Solutions

Servant of the Lake Walkthrough: Kitchen & Basement Key Locations and Alchemy Puzzle Solutions

If you have spent any real time with Servant of the Lake, you already know this is not the kind of adventure game that lets you casually click around until something works. The Vanderboom estate is packed with tiny visual clues, deliberately strange interactions, and puzzles that can make you question whether you missed an item or simply stopped thinking like a Rusty Lake player.

I absolutely love that about the game. The mansion looks quiet on the surface, but almost every room has something slightly wrong with it. A sock becomes part of a puzzle. A rat becomes a tool. A laundry line hides a key. Then the game sends you underground and starts throwing alchemy, symbols, scales, oil, and bizarre machinery at you.

This Servant of the Lake walkthrough covers the important progression puzzles from the Kitchen Key and Basement Key to the underground catacombs and the major alchemy challenges. I have also included several easy-to-miss achievement opportunities at the end, because missing one after spending hours solving everything else is exactly the sort of thing that makes a completionist lose their mind.

Servant of the Lake Kitchen Key: How to Unlock the Kitchen

The Kitchen is one of the most important areas of the estate, but you cannot simply walk in and start doing your housekeeping. The game first forces you to deal with a surprisingly elaborate laundry sequence.

Servant of the Lake Walkthrough: Kitchen & Basement Key Locations and Alchemy Puzzle Solutions

1. Collect All the Dirty Laundry

Start in the servant’s room and pick up the dirty sock sitting on the table.

From there, move into the adjacent room on the left. Search the table and floor carefully because several more dirty clothing items are scattered around this area.

You will also encounter the crying baby.

Pick the baby up and carry them upstairs. Hand the baby to Kate, who will take care of them and reward you with a dirty diaper. It is a classic Rusty Lake interaction: completely mundane on paper, slightly unsettling when you actually play it.

While you are upstairs, visit the room on the left and speak with William. Interacting with him gives you another dirty sock.

At this point, your laundry collection should include the clothing needed for the next stage.

2. Wash the Clothes and Take Them Outside

Return downstairs to the servant’s quarters.

Throw the collected laundry into the large wash tub positioned on top of the stove. Once the clothes have been processed, interact with the tub and take it.

Now head back upstairs.

Go through the room and exit through the double doors onto the balcony. Near the upper portion of the doorway, you will find the laundry line.

Use the wash tub from your inventory on the line to hang the freshly washed clothing.

This is where the actual puzzle begins.

3. Solve the Laundry Line Puzzle

The clothing has to be arranged according to the number of visible stripes or pattern markings on each item.

Place the pieces from left to right in this order:

PositionClothing
1Striped Shirt
2Underwear
3Diaper
4Trousers/Pants
5Socks
6Towel

When everything is positioned correctly, pay attention to the shirt.

Its pocket starts vibrating.

That is your cue.

Click the shirt pocket and your character pulls out a small brass key. This is the Kitchen Key.

Take it downstairs and use it on the locked door on the left side of the main hallway.

And just like that, the Kitchen is finally yours.

Servant of the Lake Basement Key Location

The game gets considerably darker once the story moves beyond normal household chores. During Chapter 3, William sends the servant underground at night to retrieve an ancient alchemical recipe book.

Getting there requires a few steps, and the Basement Key is hidden behind another sequence of seemingly unrelated tasks.

1. Distract the Cat

Go into the main hallway and move toward the central area.

Look for the wooden crate in the corridor. Inside it, you can collect a bottle of milk.

Next, enter the room on the right and inspect the storage cabinet. You will find both a small pot and a live rat.

Take both.

Now return to the main living area.

A black cat is moving around nearby. Give the live rat to the cat.

While the cat is busy eating, you can safely collect the box of matches sitting nearby.

This is one of those moments where the game rewards you for paying attention to what objects can interact with each other rather than simply collecting everything you see.

2. Prepare the Porridge

Return to the Kitchen.

Go to the fireplace and place the firewood inside. Use one of your matches to start the fire.

Put the pot on the stove.

Add the milk, followed by the oats, to prepare porridge for Aldous Vanderboom.

Carry the heated pot upstairs to his bedroom and complete the following sequence.

After the bedroom scene, you will receive a key that opens the lower drawers in the study.

Open the locked drawer.

Inside are three extremely important items:

  • Basement Key
  • Iron Spade
  • Magnetic Block

This is the moment when your earlier exploration finally pays off.

3. Enter the Basement and Find the Catacombs

Take the Basement Key to the heavy wooden door underneath the main staircase.

Unlock it and descend.

The cellar is dark, rocky, and intentionally confusing. Don’t rush through it. There are several important interactions hidden in this area.

Head toward the left corridor first.

You will find a narrow hole in the floor and a large pile of loose dirt.

Use the magnetic block on the narrow hole. This lets you retrieve an iron mechanism component and progresses the puzzle.

Next, equip the spade and dig through the loose dirt.

Keep digging until you uncover a buried wooden chest.

Use the small key obtained from the hole to unlock it.

Inside the chest is an unlit torch.

Now step away from the chest and search for the empty wall sconce.

Place the torch inside it and light it using your matches.

The darkness gives way to a newly revealed passage.

That’s your route deeper into the catacombs.

Servant of the Lake Alchemy Puzzle Solutions

The underground laboratory is where Servant of the Lake really starts flexing its puzzle muscles.

The alchemy section combines environmental clues with symbolic inputs and item interactions. It can feel messy at first, but once you understand what the game is asking for, the solutions become much more manageable.

There are three major puzzles to worry about.

Servant of the Lake Walkthrough: Kitchen & Basement Key Locations and Alchemy Puzzle Solutions

Alchemy Puzzle 1: Symbol Button Box

When you enter the laboratory with Aldous, inspect the stone workbench.

You will find a locked metal box with a strange button arrangement.

First, search the crate on the far right side of the laboratory and collect the empty glass bottles. You will need them shortly.

Now examine the buttons on the metal box.

The panel contains two repeating symbols:

  • A sideways T-shaped symbol with dots
  • A symbol resembling a small mining trolley

The required input sequence is:

Sideways T → Trolley → Sideways T → Sideways T → Trolley

Enter the symbols carefully in that exact order.

The box opens and provides two useful items: High-grade matches and a corkscrew.

Do not waste either item. You will need both for the next section.

Alchemy Puzzle 2: The Oil Barrel

The next obstacle is a cracked stone wall blocking access to the deeper part of the laboratory.

Look for the large wooden barrel positioned in the corner.

Equip your corkscrew and use it on the front of the barrel.

The barrel begins leaking black oil.

Grab one of the empty glass bottles and use it on the leaking stream to collect a sample.

Now comes the dangerous part.

Use your matches to ignite the oil that has spread across the floor underneath the barrel.

Once the fire catches, move away.

The flames cause the barrel to explode, destroying the damaged stone wall.

Walk through the new opening.

You will reach a deep fissure in the bedrock.

Pour the bottled oil into the fissure, then throw a lit match inside.

The resulting reaction clears the way forward and allows you to continue into the deeper underground section.

Honestly, this is one of my favorite puzzle chains in the whole walkthrough because it actually feels like you are experimenting with the environment instead of simply finding a key and using it on a door.

Alchemy Puzzle 3: The Final Elixir

Eventually you reach the final alchemical altar and the recipe book.

This is the big one.

The final puzzle involves balancing Sulfur, Mercury, and Salt, while also managing the liquids and weights around the central apparatus.

On the main table, inspect the balance mechanism.

You will find:

  • Three geometric weights
  • Four flask positions
  • A central liquid container
  • A marked level indicating 7 units

The objective is to manipulate the liquid until the center flask reaches the required 7-unit level and the balance becomes perfectly horizontal.

The required sequence involves transferring liquid from the 10-unit flask into the 3-unit flask, then moving the contents of the 3-unit flask into the 7-unit flask.

Repeat the required pouring cycle carefully.

The key is not to start randomly dumping liquid between containers. The puzzle is designed around controlled transfers, and one careless pour can put you right back where you started.

Once the liquid levels and weights line up correctly, the mechanism balances.

Place the required ingredients into the boiling alembic over the active flame.

The final alchemical process completes.

You obtain the chronometer and ancient tome, but don’t celebrate too early.

Your escape from the basement does not go according to plan.

As you attempt to return upstairs, Aldous Vanderboom ambushes you, forcing the servant to surrender the book and ultimately sealing the character’s fate as an eternal servant of the lake.

That ending is brutally on-brand for Rusty Lake.

Missable Servant of the Lake Achievements

If you are playing purely for the story, you can get through the major puzzles without worrying too much about optional interactions.

If you’re chasing 100% completion, though, there are several moments where you should stop and poke around before progressing.

Bathroom Keyhole Achievement

During Chapter 2, while working through the laundry sequence, don’t immediately rush outside to hang the clothes.

Before leaving for the balcony, approach the locked bathroom door.

Interact with the keyhole and peek inside.

This small interaction can trigger a hidden achievement.

It’s incredibly easy to miss because there is no obvious reason to inspect the door unless you’re the sort of player who clicks absolutely everything.

Be that player.

Rat Hunter Achievement

During Chapter 3, you obtain the live rat before dealing with the cat.

You don’t have to immediately give the rat to the cat.

Instead, take the rat into the Kitchen and attempt to place it inside the porridge pot on the stove.

This produces a unique interaction and can unlock a secret dark-humor achievement.

It is exactly the kind of ridiculous little detail that makes these games memorable.

Statue Clock Puzzle

While traveling through the underground rooms using the statues, pay attention to the clock hands displayed on the statue bases.

Take screenshots or write the times down.

These aren’t random environmental decorations.

The displayed times correspond to a secret safe puzzle in the master bedroom later on.

If you’re aiming for every secret, don’t trust yourself to remember them. Take a screenshot. Future-you will be grateful.

Final Tips for Surviving the Vanderboom Estate

Servant of the Lake rewards curiosity more than speed. If an object looks weird, interact with it. If a character reacts strangely to something, try another item. If a room seems completely pointless, there is a decent chance you’ve missed a tiny clue.

Keep important observations written down, especially symbols, numbers, clock positions, and visual patterns. Rusty Lake loves making you remember information from one room and apply it somewhere completely different.

For the major progression route, remember the overall flow:

Laundry → Kitchen Key → Kitchen → Porridge → Study Drawer → Basement Key → Catacombs → Laboratory → Alchemy → Ancient Tome.

The best advice I can give is simple: don’t brute-force everything. Servant of the Lake is built around recognizing patterns. Once you understand what the game is trying to communicate, even its strangest puzzles start to click.

And when they don’t click?

Take a screenshot, walk away for five minutes, come back, and stare at the room again.

Nine times out of ten, the answer was sitting there the entire time.
