Is Expeditions: Samurai on Xbox Game Pass? 2026 Release Date and Platform Guide
If you have been following tactical RPGs as closely as I have, Expeditions: Samurai is one of those games that immediately grabs your attention. I have always had a soft spot for strategy games that make me slow down, think about my next move, and actually care about the characters standing beside me. So when Campfire Cabal and THQ Nordic revealed a new Expeditions game set in feudal Japan, I was instantly interested.
After the excellent historical flavor of Expeditions: Rome, moving the series into the chaotic Sengoku period feels like a natural evolution. Samurai, rival warlords, political alliances, stealth, battlefield tactics, and a story inspired by real history? That is pretty much the perfect recipe for a game I would happily spend an entire weekend streaming.
But there is one question I kept seeing from viewers and other players:
Is Expeditions: Samurai on Xbox Game Pass in 2026?
Unfortunately, if you were hoping to boot it up through Game Pass on launch day, I have some bad news. Expeditions: Samurai is not currently available on Xbox Game Pass or PC Game Pass. The game launched on August 7, 2026, as a Steam Early Access title for PC.
Is Expeditions: Samurai Available on Xbox Game Pass?
Let’s get the most important information out of the way first.
As of its August 7, 2026 Early Access launch, Expeditions: Samurai is available through Steam rather than Xbox Game Pass. There is no day-one Game Pass version for Xbox consoles or PC.
| Feature | Current Status |
|---|---|
| PC Release | Steam Early Access |
| Early Access Launch | August 7, 2026 |
| Xbox Game Pass | Not Available |
| PC Game Pass | Not Available |
| Xbox Series X|S | No Confirmed Release |
| PlayStation 5 | No Confirmed Release |
| Full 1.0 Release | Planned for Q1 2027 |
| Cloud Gaming | NVIDIA GeForce NOW |
So, if you were searching for an Expeditions: Samurai Game Pass release, there isn’t one right now.
I know that is probably disappointing for Game Pass subscribers. Personally, though, I think the Steam Early Access approach makes sense for this particular project.
Why Is Expeditions: Samurai Launching in Early Access?
This is probably the most interesting part of the situation.
Campfire Cabal is not treating Early Access as a simple way to release an unfinished game and then slowly patch it. The developers have talked about using the process to rebuild a much closer relationship with their players, taking inspiration from the community-focused approach they used during their earlier Kickstarter days.
That is important because Expeditions: Samurai is designed around systems that can benefit enormously from player feedback.
Combat balance, companion abilities, stealth mechanics, character progression, crafting, narrative choices — these are all things that can look fantastic in a developer presentation but behave very differently once thousands of real players start experimenting with them.
As someone who streams strategy games, this is actually something I like seeing.
I would much rather have developers openly say, “Here is the game, tell us what works,” than pretend everything is perfect and then spend the first six months after launch fixing problems that should have been caught during testing.
There is also a practical reason for the PC-first approach. Steam makes it considerably easier to push frequent updates, hotfixes, balance changes, and experimental content compared with launching simultaneously across multiple console platforms.
That doesn’t mean an Xbox version is impossible. It simply means Xbox Game Pass isn’t part of the initial plan.
Expeditions: Samurai Release Date and 2027 Roadmap
The current Early Access release date is August 7, 2026.
The developers are targeting a full Version 1.0 release in Q1 2027, although players should remember that Early Access schedules can change.
The roadmap is particularly interesting because the current build is intended to grow significantly before the final launch.
Planned additions include:
- New story chapters and narrative branches
- More historical weapons and armor
- Expanded crafting systems
- Deeper character customization
- Additional progression options
One thing I personally appreciate is the confirmation that Early Access save files are expected to remain compatible with the final 1.0 version.
If I am going to spend 20 or 30 hours building a character, developing relationships, and making decisions that shape a campaign, the last thing I want is to hear that all of it will disappear when the full version arrives.
So far, that does not appear to be the plan.
How Much Content Is in the Early Access Version?
Now, this is where potential buyers need to manage their expectations.
The launch build isn’t the complete Expeditions: Samurai experience. It is an Early Access slice centered around the opening part of the campaign.
The current version contains approximately 6–8 hours of gameplay, including:
- Five primary story quests
- Three significant side quests
- World-map exploration
- Stealth mechanics
- Tactical combat
- Fully voiced dialogue
For some players, six to eight hours may sound small. For me, it depends entirely on what those hours are like.
A focused 7-hour tactical campaign that gives me interesting choices, memorable companions, and battles worth thinking about is much more appealing than a bloated 40-hour experience filled with repetitive missions.
And because this is Early Access, I would rather view the current content as the foundation of the finished game, not the finished game itself.
Can You Play Expeditions: Samurai Without a Gaming PC?
This is where things get a little more interesting.
While the game is currently centered around Steam, it has also been added to NVIDIA GeForce NOW.
That means you can purchase the Steam version and stream it through NVIDIA’s cloud gaming service rather than running the game locally on a powerful PC.
For viewers who constantly ask me whether they need a massive gaming rig for modern strategy games, cloud streaming is becoming a genuinely useful alternative.
Obviously, your experience will depend heavily on your internet connection. Tactical RPGs are also more forgiving of streaming latency than competitive shooters, which makes this type of game particularly well suited to cloud gaming.
So if you have an older laptop but a solid internet connection, GeForce NOW could be a surprisingly good way to experience Expeditions: Samurai.
What About Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5?
This is the part where we need to separate confirmed information from speculation.
At the moment, there is no officially confirmed Xbox Series X|S or PlayStation 5 release date for Expeditions: Samurai.
Naturally, fans are already discussing potential console versions, especially considering the history of the Expeditions franchise.
I would not be surprised to see the game eventually move beyond PC. In fact, I think a console release would make a lot of sense.
The bigger question is when.
The developers are currently focused on Early Access, feedback, content expansion, and the eventual 1.0 release. Console development adds another layer of certification, optimization, controller support, and technical testing.
Because of that, I would not expect an Xbox version immediately alongside the Early Access launch.
If a console port happens, 2027 seems like a much more realistic window, particularly after the PC version reaches 1.0.
And that brings us back to Game Pass.
Could Expeditions: Samurai Eventually Join Xbox Game Pass?
This is where I would put a big “maybe” rather than pretending we already know the answer.
There is no confirmed Xbox Game Pass deal for Expeditions: Samurai at launch.
However, that does not mean the game can never appear on Microsoft’s subscription service.
Once the Early Access period is finished and the developers begin expanding toward console platforms, Game Pass becomes a much more interesting possibility.
THQ Nordic has experience working with Microsoft’s ecosystem, and bringing a completed version of the game to Game Pass could give Expeditions: Samurai a huge boost in visibility.
From a streamer perspective, I would actually love to see that happen.
A Game Pass release would put the game in front of thousands of players who might never normally buy a niche tactical RPG. That could be particularly valuable for a title built around experimentation, different builds, companion relationships, and replayable decision-making.
But for now, there is no announcement to point to.
So don’t buy an Xbox subscription specifically expecting Expeditions: Samurai to suddenly appear in the library.
Why I’m Personally Excited About the Gameplay
The setting alone would probably have been enough to get me interested.
The Sengoku period is one of those historical eras that almost feels designed for a tactical RPG. You have competing factions, shifting alliances, political intrigue, famous warriors, assassinations, sieges, and an enormous amount of room for fictional storytelling.
Expeditions: Samurai also takes inspiration from the story of William Adams, the English navigator who famously became a samurai in Japan.
The game then takes that historical idea and twists it into an alternate-history scenario.
Instead of simply recreating Adams’ journey, the player takes his place and arrives in Japan aboard a Dutch frigate called De Albatros.
From there, the player becomes involved in the turbulent final stages of the Sengoku period.
That gives the developers plenty of freedom to create a story that feels historically grounded without being trapped by real-world events.
And personally, that’s exactly the balance I want.
Combat Looks Like a Major Highlight
The tactical combat is probably the feature I am most curious about.
Rather than relying entirely on a rigid grid-based system, Expeditions: Samurai is aiming for a more fluid turn-based structure where movement, interruptions, and actions can interact in interesting ways.
That sounds minor on paper, but it can make a huge difference.
The best tactical games make me look at the battlefield and immediately start thinking:
“What if I move this character here, trigger this ability, force that enemy to react, and then use my other character to finish the setup?”
That chain-reaction feeling is what keeps me coming back.
The stealth mechanics also add another layer. Players can scout areas, prepare ambushes, deploy tools such as smoke bombs, and coordinate takedowns before combat officially begins.
For someone like me who usually tries to find the clever solution before resorting to brute force, that sounds fantastic.
Companions Could Make or Break the Campaign
Another major feature is the companion system.
Players can recruit up to eight voiced companions, each with individual personalities, backgrounds, combat roles, and personal agendas.
More importantly, relationships can evolve depending on how you play.
You can develop friendships, rivalries, and even romantic relationships.
This is one of those features that can completely change how invested I become in a tactical RPG. I don’t want my party to feel like eight interchangeable units with different statistics.
I want to remember them.
I want to have that moment where a companion disagrees with my decision and I think, “Okay, fine. Maybe you actually have a point.”
If Expeditions: Samurai gets that aspect right, it could become one of the game’s biggest strengths.

Two-Player Co-Op Is a Huge Surprise
One feature that genuinely caught my attention is two-player drop-in/drop-out cooperative play.
The campaign can be played cooperatively, with two players controlling a pair of twins and working together through the story.
Major narrative decisions can involve both players, while tactical battles allow you to coordinate attacks and ambushes.
As a streamer, this is the kind of feature I immediately notice because it creates content naturally.
Imagine playing through a difficult mission with a friend, both of you arguing over which enemy to attack, one person insisting on stealth while the other wants to charge straight through the front door.
That is exactly the sort of chaotic teamwork that makes a stream memorable.
My Verdict: Should You Wait for Game Pass?
If you are asking me whether you should buy Expeditions: Samurai right now or wait, my answer is simple: it depends on what kind of player you are.
If you specifically want a polished, complete experience and hate Early Access, I would wait for the 1.0 release.
If you enjoy tactical RPGs and don’t mind participating in the development process, the current Steam release could be worth checking out.
The setting is excellent, the tactical foundation looks promising, and the combination of stealth, companions, diplomacy, and combat gives the game plenty of potential.
For Xbox players, though, patience is probably the better strategy.
Expeditions: Samurai is not on Xbox Game Pass in 2026, and there is currently no confirmed Xbox release date. The most logical time to reassess the situation is after the PC version reaches its planned 1.0 release in Q1 2027.
And yes, I absolutely think a future Game Pass release is possible.
Would I promise it? Absolutely not.
Would I be surprised if THQ Nordic eventually announced an Xbox version followed by a Game Pass deal? Not at all.
For now, I’m keeping Expeditions: Samurai on my radar. The idea of combining Sengoku-era politics with tactical combat, stealth, relationship-driven companions, and two-player co-op is simply too interesting to ignore.
If the developers can turn the promising Early Access foundation into the deep historical RPG they are aiming for, Expeditions: Samurai could become one of the more interesting strategy releases of 2027.
And personally, I am more than happy to watch that journey unfold.
