Blood of Dawnwalker Legendary Swords Guide: How to Get Durandal, The Purge & Imbued Sword of St. Mihai
If you’re building Coen around serious melee damage in The Blood of Dawnwalker, there are three swords you should absolutely keep on your radar: Durandal, The Purge, and the Imbued Sword of St. Mihai.
After spending a ridiculous amount of time comparing weapon stats, testing stamina-heavy combat setups, and figuring out which bonuses actually matter once fights get ugly, I’ve come to one conclusion: these aren’t simply three strong swords with fancy names. Each one is designed around a completely different approach to Coen’s combat loop.
That’s what makes the legendary weapon system so interesting.
You can brute-force plenty of encounters with ordinary steel, but once you’re dealing with tougher supernatural enemies, elite encounters, and the increasingly nasty situations that appear as the story progresses, weapon specialization starts making a huge difference. A sword that looks weaker on paper can suddenly become the better choice because its passive effects fit your build.
Durandal is the aggressive supernatural killer.
The Purge is the defensive powerhouse for human-focused combat.
And the Imbued Sword of St. Mihai is the weapon I would point toward for players who want to mix swordplay with magical abilities.
Here’s how these three legendary swords work, how to obtain them, and where they fit into a serious endgame setup.
Why Legendary Swords Matter in Blood of Dawnwalker
The sword in Blood of Dawnwalker isn’t just a number attached to your character sheet.
Your weapon affects the way Coen spends stamina, how often he can use Swordmastery abilities, how aggressively he can dodge, and how effectively he handles different enemy categories. That becomes increasingly important because the game constantly pushes you between human opponents and supernatural threats.
Legendary Longswords take that concept and push it much further.
Instead of simply offering higher damage, they come with specific passive modifiers that can completely change the feel of combat. Stamina reductions are particularly valuable because running dry in the middle of a dangerous encounter is one of the fastest ways to turn a winning fight into a disaster.
| Legendary Sword | Main Strength | Key Bonus | Acquisition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Durandal | Supernatural Combat | +11.2% Damage vs Supernatural Enemies | The Cursed Chasm |
| The Purge | Human Combat & Defense | +27% Maximum Human Health | Silver Trader |
| Imbued Sword of St. Mihai | Magic/Hybrid Builds | Magical & Cooldown Synergy | Forge It Anew |
The important thing is not to treat these weapons as a simple “best to worst” list. They’re built for different jobs.
Durandal – The Legendary Sword for Killing Supernatural Enemies
Durandal is probably the sword that immediately grabbed my attention.
Its tooltip describes it as:
“Named after the legendary Roland’s sword… or is it the real thing?”
That’s exactly the kind of flavor text I want from a legendary weapon. It sounds like something that has been sitting in the world for centuries waiting for somebody reckless enough to pick it up.
More importantly, Durandal has the numbers to justify its legendary status.
Durandal Stats
- Required Level: 11
- Attack Speed: Medium
- Base DPS: 234
- Upgrade DPS: +236
- Damage: 145–205
- Weapon Art Cooldown: 15 seconds
- Weight: 1.50
- Value: 485 Gold
The standout modifier is +11.2% Damage against Supernatural Enemies, with another +11% upgrade value available.
That makes Durandal extremely attractive once you’re fighting the nastier supernatural opposition. Instead of relying purely on raw weapon damage, you’re getting a bonus specifically targeted at the enemies that tend to make combat considerably more dangerous.
And then there’s the stamina package.
Durandal provides -21% Attack Stamina Cost and -21% Dodge Stamina Cost. That’s a huge deal in practice. You can attack more aggressively without burning through your stamina bar immediately, while the cheaper dodges give you more room to react when an enemy starts throwing something nasty at you.
The sword also provides -7% Swordmastery Ability Cooldown, helping you cycle your combat abilities more frequently.
How to Get Durandal
Durandal isn’t something you’ll casually find sitting in a merchant’s inventory.
The sword is tied to the “The Cursed Chasm” side quest. Complete the quest and its dangerous encounters, and Durandal becomes your reward.
If you’re specifically hunting legendary weapons, I’d put this quest high on your priority list. The combination of supernatural damage and stamina efficiency makes Durandal one of the most practical legendary blades for aggressive builds.
The Purge – A Defensive Monster in Sword Form
Then there’s The Purge, and this one takes a completely different approach.
Its tooltip simply says:
“A truly magnificent weapon.”
Not exactly subtle, but the stats do most of the talking.
The Purge is a Level 22 Legendary Longsword designed around human combat, survivability, stamina management, and Swordmastery uptime.
The Purge Stats
- Attack Speed: Medium
- Base DPS: 322
- Upgrade DPS: +17
- Damage: 195–282
- Weapon Art Cooldown: 15 seconds
- Weight: 1.70
- Value: 3,750 Gold
That 322 base DPS immediately puts it ahead of Durandal in raw output, but its real selling point is the defensive side of the weapon.
The Purge grants a massive +27% Maximum Human Health bonus. For a human-focused setup, that’s an enormous survivability boost.
It also provides -27% Attack Stamina Cost, -9% Swordmastery Ability Cooldown, and approximately -21.6% Block Stamina Cost.
This is the sort of sword I would equip when I know I’m going into a fight where mistakes are expensive.
There’s also an important drawback: The Purge carries a -12% damage penalty against Mortals when upgraded. That means you shouldn’t blindly assume its bonuses make it universally superior. Its strengths need to match the encounter and build you’re running.
Where to Buy The Purge
Unlike Durandal, The Purge isn’t locked behind a quest reward.
Head to Svartrau City and find the Silver Trader.
The Purge costs 3,750 gold coins, so you’re going to need a healthy wallet before making the purchase.
Personally, I think the price makes sense. This is an expensive weapon, but unlike a weapon that’s only impressive because of its damage number, The Purge gives you a defensive identity that can fundamentally change how comfortable Coen feels in prolonged combat.
Imbued Sword of St. Mihai – The Hybrid Build Dream
The third weapon is where things get particularly interesting.
The Imbued Sword of St. Mihai is tied to the game’s Arbiter progression and is clearly aimed at players who don’t want to separate physical combat from magical abilities.
Instead of being simply another high-damage longsword, this weapon works particularly well with Coen’s magical and holy-oriented progression.
How to Get the Imbued Sword of St. Mihai
You’ll need to follow the “Forge It Anew” questline.
The process revolves around restoring the ancient weapon and completing the required steps to reforge its broken components. Once the questline is finished, the fully restored Imbued Sword of St. Mihai becomes your reward.
This is one of those weapons I’d recommend saving for a build rather than immediately judging by the raw damage number.
Its biggest appeal comes from how well it fits into hybrid battlemage-style setups. If your Coen build already invests heavily into magical abilities, the sword becomes much more interesting than a conventional physical weapon.
It also works particularly well alongside the Armour of the Arbiter, making it an obvious candidate for players who want to lean hard into that equipment combination.
Which Legendary Sword Should You Use?
This is where I wouldn’t blindly follow a “best weapon” list.
The correct answer depends on what you’re actually doing.
Durandal is my pick when supernatural enemies are the priority. The combination of bonus supernatural damage and stamina reductions is fantastic for aggressive players who like staying in an enemy’s face.
The Purge makes more sense when you’re building around human combat and survivability. The +27% Maximum Human Health bonus is ridiculous when combined with its stamina and cooldown reductions.
The Imbued Sword of St. Mihai is the one I’d look at for magical hybrid builds. If your character is already invested in magical abilities and Arbiter equipment, its synergy becomes difficult to ignore.
Using Day and Night Weapon Presets
One of the smartest ways to exploit these weapons is to take advantage of the game’s day and night gear setup.
Coen doesn’t need to remain locked into one sword for the entire game. Your equipment can be configured around the changing conditions, and that’s where legendary weapons become much more interesting.
Daytime Setup
I’d lean toward The Purge during daylight, especially if your build is heavily human-oriented.
The huge maximum-human-health bonus gives you more breathing room, while its stamina and Swordmastery bonuses make extended fights easier to manage.
Nighttime Setup
Once darkness arrives, Durandal becomes much more appealing.
Supernatural enemies are exactly where its bonus damage starts earning its keep. The reduced attack and dodge stamina costs are also valuable during hectic nighttime encounters, where constantly moving and attacking can chew through your stamina incredibly quickly.
This is one of those small optimization tricks that sounds insignificant until you’ve actually played a long session with the wrong weapon equipped.
Then you notice just how often you’re running out of stamina.
How to Upgrade Your Legendary Swords
Getting a legendary sword is only half the job.
To squeeze more performance out of these weapons, you’ll want to use the available Blacksmith and Armourer services in major settlements.
Svartrau City and settlements such as Tantari can become important upgrade stops as you collect the required gold and crafting materials.
For Durandal, I’d prioritize anything that reinforces its stamina efficiency and supernatural damage role.
For The Purge, defensive bonuses are where the weapon becomes really nasty. Stacking its block and stamina advantages can turn Coen into a much more durable melee fighter.
For St. Mihai, I’d concentrate on the bonuses that support your magical rotation. Cooldown-related improvements are particularly valuable if you’re trying to maintain a smooth sword-and-spell combat loop.
The biggest mistake is upgrading a legendary weapon without considering the build around it. Don’t chase a bigger number simply because the game lets you. Look at what your character actually needs.
My Legendary Sword Ranking
If I had to rank them by practical use rather than simply throwing their DPS values into a spreadsheet, I’d break it down like this:
Best for Supernatural Enemies: Durandal
Its targeted damage bonus and stamina efficiency make it incredibly easy to recommend for supernatural hunting.
Best Defensive Legendary Sword: The Purge
That +27% Maximum Human Health bonus is ridiculous when combined with its stamina and cooldown reductions.
Best Hybrid/Magic Option: Imbued Sword of St. Mihai
For an Arbiter-focused or battlemage-style build, this is the sword I’d build around rather than merely equip.
Final Verdict
The legendary sword system in Blood of Dawnwalker is at its best when you stop asking which weapon has the biggest DPS number and start asking which weapon makes your entire build work better.
That’s why these three swords stand out.
Durandal gives Coen a brutal advantage against supernatural enemies while making attacks and dodges cheaper.
The Purge turns human-focused combat into a much more forgiving experience, combining excellent damage with an enormous health bonus and strong stamina management.
And the Imbued Sword of St. Mihai provides the foundation for players who want to blur the line between swordfighter and magical warrior.
If you’re chasing the Gear of the Gods trophy or achievement, you’ll want to keep all three on your radar. More importantly, don’t leave them sitting in your inventory just because another sword has a higher headline damage value.
In Blood of Dawnwalker, the best blade is the one that fits the fight.
For my money, I’d keep Durandal ready for the night, The Purge equipped for human-heavy encounters, and St. Mihai waiting for a proper hybrid build. That setup gives Coen answers for almost everything Laslea can throw at him during those brutal 30 days.
And honestly, that’s exactly how a legendary weapon system should feel.
