Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced Officer Guide: How to Recruit and Unlock Special Naval Abilities
When I first jumped into Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, I expected prettier water, smoother animations, and the usual visual overhaul that modern remakes love to advertise. What surprised me much more was the way Ubisoft expanded the Jackdaw itself. It no longer feels like you’re simply upgrading a ship. You’re slowly building a crew of people who actually matter.
One of my favorite additions is the Officer system. Instead of every sailor feeling interchangeable, certain characters permanently change how naval combat works. Some improve defense, others completely alter your offensive options, and each comes with their own questline instead of being another menu upgrade you purchase with currency.
As someone who spends way too many hours testing mechanics instead of rushing through the story, I’d honestly recommend unlocking these officers as soon as the game allows it. Their abilities aren’t just convenient—they genuinely make difficult naval encounters much more enjoyable.
This guide explains when officer recruitment becomes available, where to find every major officer, and why each one deserves a place aboard the Jackdaw.
Why Officers Matter More Than Ship Upgrades
A stronger hull or bigger cannons obviously help, but officers give something equipment can’t.
They introduce mechanics.
Instead of simply increasing a percentage somewhere in the background, every officer changes the way you approach naval battles.
Some examples include:
- Perfectly timed defensive maneuvers
- Improved cannon control during combat
- More specialized mortar attacks
- Additional character-driven side stories
That’s why I prioritized recruiting officers before spending huge amounts of resources on late-game upgrades.
When Officer Recruitment Unlocks
Officer missions become available after reaching Sequence 4 and finishing “This Old Cove.”
Completing this mission permanently establishes Great Inagua as Edward’s headquarters.
After returning home, Adewale invites Edward for a private conversation at the tavern.
This dialogue introduces the concept that the Jackdaw needs experienced leadership instead of relying only on ordinary sailors. Shortly afterward, the game opens a dedicated Officers section on the world map.
From there, officer missions are marked with their own unique icon, making them easy to identify while exploring the Caribbean.
Not every officer is available immediately, but the first two can be recruited surprisingly early.
Officer Overview
| Officer | Location | Unlock Window | Main Benefit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lucy Baldwin | Salt Key Bank | Sequence 4 | Perfect Brace |
| Abel Galvão (“The Padre”) | Punta del Caracol | Sequence 4 | Flexible Barrage Aiming |
| Tobias “Deadman” Smith | A World Without Gold | Late Game | Cohort Mortar |
Lucy Baldwin — The Shipwright
If you’re wondering which officer deserves your attention first, my answer is simple.
Lucy Baldwin.
Her ability probably saved my ship more often than any expensive hull upgrade ever did.
Where to Find Her
Lucy is imprisoned aboard a heavily protected Royal Navy Man-o-War near Salt Key Bank.
The mission gives players several options.
You can quietly infiltrate the vessel using stealth, sneak across the rigging, eliminate guards without raising the alarm, or simply arrive with a heavily upgraded Jackdaw and fight your way aboard.
I actually enjoyed the stealth route much more because it feels closer to classic Assassin’s Creed gameplay.
After freeing Lucy, she joins your crew as the Jackdaw’s Shipwright.
Lucy’s Special Ability — Perfect Brace
This is easily one of the strongest defensive mechanics in the remake.
Normally, bracing only reduces incoming damage.
Lucy changes that.
If you activate Brace at the precise moment before enemy fire lands, the Jackdaw performs a Perfect Brace, reducing incoming damage dramatically.
You’ll know the timing was correct when:
- a shield icon briefly appears,
- the impact sounds noticeably heavier,
- your hull barely loses any durability.
During legendary naval encounters, this mechanic becomes almost addictive.
Instead of constantly repairing damage afterward, you’re rewarded for learning enemy attack timing.
That’s much more satisfying than simply stacking defensive upgrades.
Abel Galvão — “The Padre”
The second recruitable officer offers something entirely different.
Where Lucy improves survival, The Padre improves precision.
His backstory is also one of my favorites because it avoids making him another stereotypical pirate.
He’s a religious man with a violent military history who would rather protect innocent villagers than chase treasure.
Naturally, Edward ends up dragging him back into conflict.
Where to Recruit The Padre
Travel to Punta del Caracol after unlocking officer missions.
You’ll discover that hostile forces are threatening the local settlement.
The recruitment mission focuses almost entirely on land combat.
Players must:
- defend the village,
- eliminate several enemy waves,
- defeat the attacking commander,
- protect important structures.
Only after proving your ability does Abel agree to join the Jackdaw.
Flexible Barrage Aiming Explained
This ability sounds fairly small when you first read the description.
In practice?
It’s incredibly useful.
Normally, firing cannons locks your trajectory immediately.
Once the volley begins, that’s it.
With The Padre aboard, you can continue adjusting your aim while multiple cannon shots are still firing.
That creates several advantages:
- compensate for enemy movement,
- correct your aim during rough waves,
- spread damage across multiple ship sections,
- finish off weakened vessels more consistently.
It’s one of those mechanics you don’t fully appreciate until you go back and play without it.
Then everything suddenly feels less responsive.
Tobias “Deadman” Smith
Unlike the first two officers, Tobias isn’t available early.
You’ll need to progress deep into the campaign before his storyline appears.
His questline begins around the major mission called A World Without Gold.
Recruiting Tobias
Deadman isn’t impressed by reputation alone.
His recruitment involves several challenging objectives, including dangerous naval battles and pursuit missions across hostile waters.
Without spoiling too much, expect to prove that the Jackdaw deserves its growing reputation.
Only after completing his trials will Tobias officially become your Weaponmaster.
His personality also stands out.
He’s exhausted, cynical, and clearly carrying years of emotional baggage.
Compared to many overly cheerful NPCs found in modern games, he feels surprisingly believable.
Cohort Mortar
This ability changes how mortar attacks behave.
Standard mortars cover a wide area.
They’re great against forts or large groups but often waste damage.
Cohort Mortar narrows the impact zone considerably.
That smaller targeting circle demands better accuracy, but the reward is concentrated damage against priority targets.
I ended up using it constantly during crowded naval battles because it allowed me to eliminate dangerous enemies without scattering explosions everywhere.
For experienced players, I’d honestly take precision over raw area damage almost every time.
Which Officer Should You Prioritize?
If you’re unsure where to begin, this is the order I’d personally recommend.
| Priority | Officer | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Lucy Baldwin | Makes difficult naval fights dramatically easier. |
| 2 | Abel Galvão | Improves consistency during every ship battle. |
| 3 | Tobias Smith | Powerful, but unlocked much later anyway. |
Lucy simply provides too much survivability to ignore.
After mastering Perfect Brace, many encounters become significantly less stressful.
Do You Need to Finish Every Questline?
Thankfully, no.
One detail I appreciated is that you don’t have to complete every chapter of an officer’s personal story before benefiting from their combat bonuses.
Their primary abilities unlock once they officially join the Jackdaw.
Later missions mostly reward players with:
- cosmetic ship customization,
- exclusive crew appearances,
- rare crafting materials,
- additional character interactions.
That makes the system flexible.
Players interested only in gameplay can recruit officers quickly, while completionists still have meaningful optional content afterward.
My Thoughts After Using Every Officer
After spending dozens of hours experimenting with different naval builds, I honestly think this system is one of the remake’s strongest improvements.
The original Black Flag already had fantastic ship combat.
Resynced doesn’t reinvent it.
Instead, it adds enough tactical depth that every encounter feels a little less repetitive.
Lucy rewards perfect timing.
The Padre rewards precision.
Deadman rewards accuracy.
None of them simply increase damage by 10% or reduce cooldowns by five seconds.
They actively encourage you to become a better captain.
That’s exactly the kind of progression I like seeing in modern action games.
Instead of making players stronger through bigger numbers, the game rewards mastering its mechanics.
If you’re planning to challenge Legendary Ships or simply want the Jackdaw to feel like the most dangerous vessel in the Caribbean, recruiting every officer should be one of your highest priorities. They’re not just side content—they fundamentally improve one of the best naval combat systems Ubisoft has ever created.
